Join the fight against food waste

What do you get when you combine 100s of kg of unused vegetables, with: 3 DJs, 8 chefs, 100 volunteers and 1000 hungry people? A Disco Soup of course.

The gist is this:

Step 1 – Get an amazing space
The charity which organised the event, Feedback, managed to ‘take over’ Mercato Metropolitano in Elephant & Castle for the evening (if you haven’t been there already, go! It’s a pop-up food & drink space in south London rooted in sustainability and dedicated to supporting local producers)

Step 2 – Gather food which would have otherwise been wasted
In this instance, volunteers collected vegetables and bread from local shops and producers.

Step 3 – Put on some music
Luckily, the Ministry of Sound is just next door, so some awesome DJs were on hand to supply the tuuunes

Step 4 – Grab a load of people and get chopping
Self explanatory.

Step 5 – Make a whopping great load of soup

Step 6 – Eat, dance and be merry.

Sophia and I were lucky enough to be involved in this fantastic event yesterday – along with about 998 other people. Food waste is a massive issue in the UK, with nearly 1/3 of all that we produce ending up not being consumed. Whilst there are plenty of things which need to be reformed at an industry level, the work and events that Feedback and other food waste charities (such as Foodcycle the Real Junk Food Project and Love Food Hate Waste) are doing is vital at highlighting the extent to which this is a problem – but also great at bringing people together to share and celebrate food which would have otherwise gone in the bin.

This week in the Sustainable Revolution, I ask you to check out these charities (for the beer drinkers amongst you, also check out Toast Ale – a beer which Feedback brew from wasted bread!) and support them in whatever way that you can. Either by attending or volunteering at their events, or by following their tips on how you can reduce food waste in your own home.
